Have a small space but still interested in gardening? You’ll want to check out GreenStalk Garden’s vertical towers! I’ve been a GreenStalk customer since 2021 and can genuinely share my love for this amazing product! I’ve recently become an affiliate with them because I looooove their products so much. I have a code AMBER10 that you can always use for $10 off $75 or more. I do earn a small commission if you use this code. I’ve paid for the majority of my planters and all the accessories with my own money. Hope this review can help you decide if a GreenStalk is the right fit for you.
Original vs Leaf Planter
GreenStalk makes two types of planters. The Original has 5 tiers, with each tier providing 6 pockets. That makes a total of 30 pockets for planting. Each pocket in the original can accommodate a 10 inch depth. This is the best planter for things with bigger roots such as tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, etc.
The Leaf has 7 tiers, with each tier also providing 6 pockets. That makes a total of 42 pockets for planting. Each pocket can accommodate a 7 inch depth. This is great for plants with shallow roots such as herbs, strawberries, lettuce, etc.
If you’re still in between on those two they also offer both in one planter. It’s called The Inventors Bundle! You even get a spinner base (with wheels) and a support ring with this bundle.
Is Set Up Hard?
It’s very easy! I’ve even set up two just by myself. It comes with everything you need, including an instruction booklet.
When first setting up I suggest to stack your tiers empty, then add your soil. This will help alleviate any heavy lifting. It’s important to make sure you start with a level surface. If things aren’t level, the watering system won’t work as effectively.
I will also note it’s important to stack each tier so the planter’s feet interlock with the tier’s below. Once you add the soil, the weight of that will help it click into place. Sometimes you can even hear this ‘click’ into place. If you are noticing it’s not clicking, then I usually just place the weight of my hands to push it down a bit.
Will It Fall Over?
If stacked properly & level (like the description above) it should not fall. I’ve experienced some heavy winds about 20-30 mph here in the south and not one time has my tower fallen over. If you are still unsure during heaving winds, then a good suggestion would be to move your tower against a wall (another good reason to get the base with wheels). It’s also important to make sure your tower is fully watered before a storm. The weight of the water in the soil will also help it from falling over.
How to decide what to grow in the pockets?
You can grow just about anything in your GreenStalk. I even once grew a luffa in mine!!
It’s important to do some planning before you plant. You’ll want to consider to plant larger plants near the bottom tiers, such as tomatoes. That way it has room to grow up. For those plants that will grow large, you’ll also want to decide what to grow in the pockets above them. For example, a large tomato plant will be shading some of the plants in the pockets above, especially as it grows. You’ll want to consider adding some plants that can tolerate shade.
What makes GreenStalk so special?
1. First off their vertical towers with watering system is patented. The watering system is an amazing, yet simple way to ensure all your tiers get watered evenly. All you need to do is fill the top reservoir with water. From there the gray disks in between each tier flow down and deliver each tier with water. Any excess water is drained from the base. I like to put a watering can to collect the leftover water to reuse in my garden. My deck is about a few feet off the ground so collecting that water is easy for my set-up. If you’re on a level surface then I would suggest adding a shallow bowl/dish to collect the excess water.
2. GreenStalk’s planters are proudly made in the US (from East Tennessee)! The planters are made from high quality food-grade, which are also UV-resistant, BPA, BPS & PVC-free plastic. All are durable for all-season gardening.
3. They are a family business. I really love this feature about GreenStalk! As a conscious consumer I always want to support a small business and I like to know where my money is going towards.
4. They have a 5 year warranty on all their products! GreenStalks are guaranteed not to crack or fade for 5 years even if you use them outside year-round.
5. Customer service is top notch! As a customer myself, I had one of my support rings break. When I reached out to them, they responded quickly and sent a replacement!
What planter accessories are a must?
I have every accessory they offer, and I’ve paid with all of them with my own money. The 3 top accessory I would suggest is:
1. The Spinner Base (with wheels). This allows you to rotate the planter to get even sunlight. You can get this with or without wheels. I personally prefer with wheels. This allows me to fully move the entire planter if needed. Especially during super hot weather or freezing temps. You’ll be thankful you installed the wheels when you need to move it!
2. Support Rings. This allows you to easily grow lots of vining items. While also supporting some larger plants from breaking, like tomatoes.
3. Automatic Watering System is an also a must! I have mine set up on a timer. I live in the hot Texas weather and sometimes I dread going outside to water in the summer. But the automatic watering system does the watering on its own! It’s so easy to set up as well – the kit comes with everything you need. (With the exception of a Bluetooth timer for the watering). I’m also super thankful I have this when I’m out of town as well.
They also offer an insect and frost protection cover. While these are both nice to have, I wouldn’t necessarily say these are a must to have. I think it also depends on what climate you live in. Obviously I rarely use my frost cover while living in Texas. But it is nice to have for a few days out of the year. I find myself using the insect cover more while living in Texas.
While these covers were designed to be used with your GreenStalk, they aren’t exclusive to just GreenStalks. You can easily use all these covers on large bushes or small trees as well. I really like how the covers have a large zipper. One little feature I also really love about the covers is the little tag of who made each cover.
Is there a special soil to use?
Since this is a container garden, GreenStalk does recommend a soil that is light and fluffy. I personally like to use ProMix (which is also a brand GreenStalk recommends).
My garden store offers the large ProMix bag, which saves me the most money. Upfront it can be pricey to fill your GreenStalk. Typically you’ll need in between 6 and 8 gallons to fill a GreenStalk. But once you have it fill up, you’ll just need your amend the soil each growing season. This is explained below.
How to amend soil?
I typically keep the same soil in my tiers for a few years. I mainly do this because once the soil settles in after a while, the tiers are heavy to move! After each growing season your soil line will settle. I generally just add some extra soil to the top of each pocket. GreenStalk does recommend to keep the soil to the very top of each tier.
I also like to sprinkle in some of my homemade worm castings as well. For me I’ll usually empty out all my tiers once every 3 years or so. Although this isn’t completely necessary. I like to empty each tier into a large IKEA bag. From there I will break up any large roots that have formed. Then I’ll a little extra soil, worm castings, or slow release fertilizer, and perlite. I mix it all up in the bag and then re-add to each tier of the GreenStalk.
I’ve also done some fun upcycling with some of the GreekStalk products. The support rings come in a beautiful detailed drawstring bag. I’ve made some pretty pillows and a little zipper bag out of those!
I also have some more upcycling ideas in the works. So be sure to bookmark this page or follow me on Instagram to see updates.
