“Well, it says to form a circle of salt to protect from zombies, witches, and old boyfriends.” Allison from Hocus Pocus

Sustainability is about using what you already have and getting creative with how to use it. Especially during Halloween time, which can be a wasteful holiday. Need to make a last minute Halloween prop for your costume? Of course you could go out to the store and buy something but using what you already have is the most sustainable thing! Here is a fun, easy and sustainable tutorial for you! I dressed up as Allison from Hocus Pocus this year and the costume can’t be completed without a salt container! I wanted the prop to be functional so I made it into a purse.

What you’ll need:

•Salt Container

•Zipper

•Glue

•Yarn or String

•Scissors or Knife

Step 1: Start by emptying your salt into another container for later use.

Step 2Carefully cut the top portion of your salt container off. You’ll see there is already a line that separates the two to make the cutting easy. I found using a sharp knife was the easiest.

Step 3: Get your zipper and glue ready. Open up your zipper and glue the bottom zipper to the main body of the salt container. Then glue the top zipper to the small top portion. My zipper was a little short as you can see in the below photos, but it still worked. Be sure to double check that is zips correctly as you go along.

Step 4: Now time to make it into a purse. Add two small holes to the sides of your salt container. Tie a knot on the inside at each hole. I braided my yarn to give it a little more dimension.

That’s it! It makes for a fun, functional prop. Below is me dressed as Allison from Hocus Pocus (along with my salt purse in hand). I recently visited Salem, Massachusetts and took pictures in front of Allison and Max’s house. A true fan girl moment! I also made my costumes sweater with the same yarn as the salt purses string. In fact I spent no money at all on this costume, I used everything I already had laying around.  I hope this encourages you to look around at what you already have and get creative this Halloween!

Allison’s House is at the Ropes Masion located at 318 Essex Street Salem, MA. The home is actually a musuem you can go inside.  However I dont believe they did any filming for the movie inside.

Max’s House is located at 4 Ocean Ave. Salem, MA.  Just be aware this is someones private home.  So don’t go onto the property or knock the door.  If you go around halloween time they actally have the streets blocked off for traffic.  You’ll have to park at the Forest River Park (there is a very small charge to park) and walk 5 minutes over to the house.

Mr. Sustainably Amber even dressed up as Max! He also used everything he already owned.  I just made the upside down G for his hat out of old fabric scraps.  This was a memorable Halloween I’ll always cherish!

Come on, it’s all just a bunch of hocus pocus……Happy sustainable Halloween to you all!
